For the fourth consecutive year, the Ministry of Education and Research is organizing the Great National Dictation, one of the largest public events dedicated to Romanian Language Day. On August 31, students, teachers, parents, grandparents, and anyone wishing to test their knowledge of Romanian are invited to take part in the dictation, TRIBUNA reports.

This year’s edition is expected to bring together around 3,500 participants from across the country. Approximately 2,500 people will write the dictation in the Great National Assembly Square, while another 1,000 will participate in similar events held in district centers.

The fourth edition is taking place in a year of particular significance, as the Republic of Moldova marks 35 years since the proclamation of Independence. By organizing the Great National Dictation, the Ministry of Education and Research aims to encourage knowledge and correct use of the Romanian language and to turn Romanian Language Day into an opportunity for learning for people of all ages.

Registration opened on Monday, August 10, during a press conference held by Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun and State Secretary Adriana Cazacu.

“The Great National Dictation was launched in 2023 out of a desire to celebrate the Romanian language through an event open to everyone. Four years later, we see that this initiative has become a tradition. Every year, the Great National Assembly Square is transformed into an open-air classroom, with people of different ages and professions taking their seats. In the year when we mark 35 years of independence, we invite everyone who loves the Romanian language to celebrate it together,” Minister Dan Perciun said.

Those interested can register until August 24, 2026, by completing the registration form.

The Great National Dictation will begin at 9:00 a.m., while access and participant registration will open at 7:30 a.m. Participation is free of charge, and the Ministry of Education and Research will provide sheets of paper, pens, water, and caps. The authors of the best papers will receive awards at a public event to be organized by the Ministry in September or October.

The Great National Dictation was launched by the Ministry of Education and Research in 2023 as part of efforts to promote the Romanian language and encourage its correct use. The three previous editions brought together thousands of participants. The Great National Dictation complements the Ministry’s efforts to expand access to Romanian-language learning. Through the National Program for Learning Romanian, the Ministry of Education and Research offers free courses to people who wish to improve their knowledge and use of the language. Thus, from Romanian-language courses to the Great National Dictation, the Ministry is pursuing the same objective: creating more opportunities for people to learn, practice, and use Romanian with confidence. The Great National Dictation is organized by the Ministry of Education and Research under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova.
