Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu held a meeting today with Giuseppe Grimaldi, Head of Operations of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in the Republic of Moldova, reports TRIBUNA.
The officials reviewed the progress of projects implemented with EBRD support, focusing on road rehabilitation and strengthening energy security.
Prime Minister Munteanu emphasized the importance of cooperation with the EBRD for the country’s sustainable development, highlighting the institution’s role in supporting reforms and strengthening Moldova’s economy.
“The financial assistance and expertise provided by the EBRD are essential to modernizing infrastructure and increasing our economy’s competitiveness. We have a strong partnership and a shared vision. Together, through the implementation of the Growth Plan for Moldova, we will bring the country closer to European standards,” stated the Prime Minister.
The two discussed major infrastructure projects currently underway in Moldova with EBRD support, stressing the need to advance and prioritize them based on current needs.
A total of 67 projects are being implemented, targeting key areas such as road and rail modernization, energy interconnection, energy efficiency, enhanced gas supply security, and improved waste management. Notable projects include the rehabilitation and expansion of the Chișinău M2 Ring Road, the Chișinău–Leușeni highway, the Vulcănești–Chișinău power line, and the modernization of centralized heating systems in Bălți and Chișinău.
A future priority is expanding access to finance for farmers — a measure that complements irrigation system modernization projects aimed at boosting productivity and resilience in the agricultural sector.
Giuseppe Grimaldi assumed his role as Head of EBRD Operations in Moldova on October 1, 2025. Since beginning its work in the country in 1992, the EBRD has invested over €2.8 billion in 188 projects.
