In 2023, the number of party members from the Republic of Moldova decreased significantly. With 61 registered parties, the number of members last year reached 187,424 – close to the declared membership of 46 parties in 2019 – 152,640. Compared to 2022, when there were 256,708 members, the number decreased by over 69,000. The findings are contained in the Promo-LEX Report “Financing of political parties in 2023”, informs TRIBUNA.
At the same time, according to the report, in 2020 the number of party members was similar to that of 2022 – 255,270 members, and in 2021 it was the highest number of members reported by parties in the last 5 years – 304,713.
“We find that the increase in the number of registered political parties is not accompanied by an increase in the number of party members. The described situation is largely explained by the declaration by the Constitutional Court of the former “SHOR” Political Party as unconstitutional, which led to its deletion from the state register of political parties. As a result, the 48,263 members reported by the ex-Political Party „SHOR”(June 30, 2022) are no longer found in the financial reports submitted to the CEC.
Another cause could be the decrease in the number of members required to register a political party (from 4,000 until August 2020 – to 1,000 from August 2020)” – the experts explained.
It should be noted that, for the year 2023, the most party members were reported by the Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova (14,220), the Action and Solidarity Party (12,602) and the Liberal Party (10,600). Compared to 2022, the largest increase in the number of party members was reported by PAS (+1,951 members) and the Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova (+1,260 members), and the largest decrease – by the Forța Party Diaspora (- 4,991 members) and the People’s Will Party (- 1,832 members).
