Thousands of members and supporters of the “SHOR” party protested today at the Prosecutor General’s Office against the pressure on MP Marina Tauber and other party representatives. The crowd demanded the release of Marina Tauber and the resignation of the current government, which they accuse of abusing the opposition.
Marina Tauber, political prisoner! Marina, we’re with you! The government should quit! These are some of the slogans chanted at the protest in front of the Prosecutor General’s Office, where the new head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, Veronica Dragalin, held a press conference, where she talked about how she will work in her new position.
Orhei District Chairman Dinu Turcanu reiterated that Marina Tauber is a political prisoner and that the current ruling regime is a totalitarian one.
„Marina Tauber is a political prisoner. What is happening to Marina Tauber fits in perfectly with what has happened to other political prisoners. Our lawyers have all the evidence to prove it. The usurpation of state power began during the time of Vlad Filat, the political godfather of the current government, who took over the worst practices. The ‘SHOR’ Party is not being persecuted for the first time. The Prosecutor General’s Office has apologised to the members of the ‘SHOR’ party for being persecuted and pressured. Marina Tauber is once again being subjected to an injustice, while people accused of treason are at liberty. Almost a month since Marina Tauber has been in Penitentiary No. 13, no state prosecutor has visited her, she has not been heard or asked for a statement. We describe these actions as an attempt to intimidate the opposition, in particular, one of the most vocal opposition leaders”, stated Dinu Turcanu.
For her part, the MP of the “SHOR” Party, Reghina Apostolova, called on the new head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office to get involved in the political case of Marina Tauber, so that the “SHOR” Party MP can have a fair trial.
„ Fair justice, unfortunately, does not exist in the Republic of Moldova. In the history of our country there has not been a case similar to that of Marina Tauber, that for a signature to be imprisoned. In spite of everything, she is a leader loved by people, who has done many good things for citizens. Marina Tauber is not simply a penitentiary detainee, she is a political prisoner. We ask the Head Prosecutor Veronica Dragalin, who has experience in the US, to get involved in Marina Tauber’s case so that our colleague gets a fair trial. Marina Tauber is not a criminal, but a fair person. Free Marina Tauber!”, stated Reghina Apostolova.
Sergiu Labliuc, the mayor of Jora de Mijloc, where Marina Tauber was mayor and later elected MP, also took part in the protest. According to him, Marina Tauber is wrongly remanded in custody and there is no evidence to justify her detention.
„Justice exists to restore justice. I do not believe, nor does anyone believe, that there were no other instruments and methods that could have been applied in the case of Marina Tauber, even if she is suspected and accused of what she is accused of. I urge the government to concern itself with the welfare of the people, with salaries, with tariffs, with the price of gas and bread, and to leave justice to those who must do justice”, stated Sergiu Labliuc.
At the same time, Irina Bogaciuc, the deputy chairperson of Orhei district, stated the following:
„We are currently witnessing political repression in order to shut us up, to keep us silent. We have been warned about all the actions that are coming against us. It is unfair that a young, beautiful, organised woman, a leader of the opposition, should be imprisoned in Penitentiary No. 13. No to debauchery! We want to tell the Prosecutor General, who is carrying out orders, that exactly the same will be done to him at some point if this debauchery continues”.
The honorary chairman of the “SHOR” Party, Valerii Klimenko, also expressed the hope that Marina Tauber will be given justice and that the current government will resign.
