PLDM: Changing the Name on the Prime Minister’s Door Does Not Erase Years in Power or Cancel Accountability

The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) describes as manipulative the attempt to present the first 100 days of Vasile Tofan’s Government as the beginning of a new administration.

According to the party, the retention of several ministers from previous cabinets confirms the continuity of the same PAS administration, which it says has been marked by a lack of professionalism, vision, and compromises on integrity. Changing the Prime Minister does not eliminate responsibility for the previous years in power.

“Having presented himself as a man with ‘a project for Moldova,’ Vasile Tofan has become an executor of the PAS agenda, quickly abandoning his own ideas. Local public administration (LPA) reform, fiscal policy, and protecting the population from rising prices demonstrate the gap between statements and decisions. Citizens have the right to know how the current Government differs from its predecessors.

The assessment of the first 100 days must be based on concrete results: investigating excessive salaries and preferential treatment of PAS-affiliated individuals, combating call-centre scams, arms and drug trafficking, protecting personal data, purchasing gas on time at favourable prices, and ensuring sufficient budgetary resources to support vulnerable groups. The Government must explain any delays and demonstrate that assistance reaches those who need it, without forcing citizens to bear the cost of poor decisions through higher bills,” the party stated.

At the same time, PLDM is demanding transparency regarding relations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), borrowing on the domestic market, difficulties in accessing low-cost external financing, and measures to reduce the public debt burden.

“The economy and the cost of government borrowing cannot be concealed behind a celebratory 100-day report.

Meanwhile, the PAS Government is preparing a new salary law under which the basic salaries of MPs and President Maia Sandu are expected to increase by approximately 120% and 150%, respectively, following previous salary increases for ministers. While citizens are being asked to remain patient in the face of rising prices, this disparity raises serious questions about fairness and political accountability.

PLDM warns that PAS cannot hide its incompetence behind European integration, using citizens’ genuine European aspirations as a shield for its own failures.

The historic opportunity offered to the Republic of Moldova by the European Union has not been translated into economic progress commensurate with the support received. The economy remains insufficiently prepared to compete in the European market, while accession negotiations cannot replace the modernisation of enterprises, improved competitiveness, and higher living standards.

European integration is a national project, not the exclusive property of PAS. It must be pursued with a coherent vision, renewed momentum, and the involvement of society as a whole,” the Liberal Democrats added.

PLDM considers the Tofan Government’s 100-day record a continuation of the failures of PAS governance and rejects what it describes as an attempt to turn the first 100 days into a public relations exercise.

“Governance must be judged by decisions, fulfilled commitments, and their impact on people’s lives. Changing the name on the Prime Minister’s door does not erase years in power or cancel accountability. The Republic of Moldova has political alternatives, and citizens have the right to demand and pursue them,” the party concluded.
