Head of State revokes Moldovan citizenship of three individuals

President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu signed decrees today, October 29, revoking the Moldovan citizenship of three individuals: Iurie Cara, Andrei Safonov and Serghei Verdeș, TRIBUNA reports.

Iurie Cara and Andrei Safonov are members of the so-called legislature of the separatist regime in Tiraspol. They participated in adopting unconstitutional acts that violate the rights of Moldovan citizens in the Transnistrian region, promote the ideology of the “Russian world” and advocate maintaining Russia’s illegal military presence on the country’s territory.

Serghei Verdeș obtained citizenship in violation of the legal procedure, despite a negative assessment from the Security and Intelligence Service.

The citizenship revocation procedure was initiated by the Public Services Agency based on the findings of the Security and Intelligence Service, under the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova. The law provides for citizenship to be revoked for committing particularly serious acts that harm the interests of the state, or for acquiring citizenship by circumventing legal requirements.

The authorities will continue to act in accordance with the law to protect the constitutional order and the national interest.
