US Provides Moldova with $1.2 Million Grant to Strengthen Cybersecurity

The Republic of Moldova will receive $1.2 million in direct assistance from the United States government as part of a broader package of American investments. The funding will support the development of a Security Operations Center (SOC) to strengthen the country’s capacity to prevent, monitor, and respond to cyber threats, TRIBUNA reports.

The grant agreement was signed on October 22, 2026, in the presence of US Ambassador to Moldova Joseph Mark Burkhalter, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Claudiu Năsui, State Secretary Michelle Iliev, Moldtelecom’s interim Director General Viorel Motorniuc, and representatives of the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).

As digital services expand and public institutions and businesses increasingly rely on technology, protecting digital infrastructure and ensuring service continuity have become essential to maintaining a secure and resilient digital environment.

The Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization supports strengthening cybersecurity as part of Moldova’s broader efforts to modernize and digitalize its economy.

“For the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, digital transformation means expanding online services, adopting new technologies, and ensuring the reliability and security of these services. A trusted digital environment is essential for citizens, businesses, and investors alike. We will continue to promote the modernization of digital infrastructure, advance cybersecurity practices aligned with European standards, and contribute to the development of a competitive and resilient economy,” Minister Claudiu Năsui said.

The new Security Operations Center will improve the country’s ability to identify and monitor cyber incidents while strengthening response mechanisms to emerging digital threats.

“This grant represents a concrete step that delivers benefits for both the Republic of Moldova and the United States. We want to be a trusted technology partner for Moldova as it develops its digital economy. American technology is innovative and secure, and Moldova can rely on it,” US Ambassador Joseph Mark Burkhalter stated.

Moldtelecom’s role in the project is based on the company’s experience in developing and managing telecommunications infrastructure across Moldova. The initiative follows approximately two years of preparation and international cooperation.

“Digital security is no longer just a technological necessity; it is an essential condition for the functioning of the economy and the protection of critical infrastructure. Through this project, Moldtelecom reaffirms its commitment not only to developing connectivity but also to building a safer digital environment for the entire Republic of Moldova,” the company’s interim Director General, Viorel Motorniuc, said.

The US grant is expected to strengthen Moldova’s national cybersecurity capabilities and improve the resilience of its digital infrastructure. Through cooperation between national authorities, American partners, and the telecommunications sector, the project aims to create a safer digital environment and better protect essential services and infrastructure.
