Moldovan Prime Minister Tells IMF Experts Economic Growth Must Be Driven by Investment and Business Reforms

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan met today with a team of experts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Alina Iancu, who are on a working visit to the Republic of Moldova from October 21 to 28, TRIBUNA reports.

Discussions focused on recent economic developments, macroeconomic outlook, and the government’s economic policy priorities. The talks covered fiscal and budgetary policy, public financial management, structural reforms, developments in the energy sector, social protection measures, economic growth, and investment attraction.

The head of government reaffirmed the cabinet’s commitment to responsible economic policies aimed at maintaining macroeconomic stability, strengthening public finance sustainability, and creating a favorable environment for economic development.

“We are counting on sustainable economic growth based on investment, removing barriers to business, encouraging entrepreneurship and competition, increasing productivity, and improving the efficiency of state-owned enterprises, including through privatization where appropriate. We are not counting on growth driven primarily by unsustainable public spending. Fiscal discipline and economic development must go hand in hand,” Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said.

IMF mission chief Alina Iancu, in turn, highlighted the importance of continuing discussions on Moldova’s economic priorities and reform agenda.

“We are pleased to have this opportunity for dialogue with the new government, to discuss economic policy priorities and reforms, as well as how the IMF can continue to provide support,” Iancu stated.

The two sides agreed to maintain an open and constructive dialogue, including by drawing on the IMF’s expertise in areas considered priorities for the economic development of the Republic of Moldova.
