The Diaspora Force Party Calls on Authorities to Reconsider Borrowing on Domestic and International Markets

The Diaspora Force Party expresses concern over the rapid increase in public debt in recent years, particularly in 2026. According to the party, this creates short-, medium-, and long-term risks that the authorities appear unwilling to acknowledge, TRIBUNA reports.

“Public debt has already exceeded 150 billion lei, and the country’s borrowing pace has increased significantly in recent months. In previous years, public debt grew by 4–5 billion lei during the first eight months of the year. During the same period this year, however, it increased by approximately 15 billion lei. This means that the rate of indebtedness has risen nearly threefold.

Of particular concern is the increase in domestic public debt, which exceeded 60 billion lei in September this year. In just one month, domestic public debt rose by 2 billion lei, marking the largest increase in the past two years. In September 2026, domestic public debt was 26% higher than during the same period last year. Furthermore, during the first nine months of this year, domestic public debt increased by 8.2 billion lei, compared with 3.9 billion lei during the same period in 2025,” the party stated.

The Diaspora Force Party calls on the authorities to reconsider their approach to borrowing on domestic and international markets.

“Maintaining the current pace of borrowing or increasing it further could have extremely negative consequences. At some point, the Republic of Moldova could find itself in a situation where it is no longer able to meet its public debt obligations.

Even at this stage, the government spends 6–7 billion lei annually on interest payments for previously contracted loans. If the authorities do not reconsider their approach, this amount could increase considerably, creating new risks for the stability of the public finance system.

The Diaspora Force Party calls on the authorities to act with reason and responsibility. The situation can still be brought under control today, but tomorrow it may already be too late!” the party added.
