An agreement on cooperation regarding the implementation of the “Open Urban Development Program in Moldova” project was signed as part of the construction of the Chisinau–Straseni–Calarasi main water pipeline, with the expansion of the operating area of S.A. “Apa-Canal Chisinau,” TRIBUNA reports.

The project is financed by the Government of Germany through KfW Development Bank and includes the construction of a new water intake station on the Dniester River.

Speaking at today’s meeting, General Mayor Ion Ceban said that Chisinau is making every effort to implement this project, which will provide drinking water to an increasing number of citizens in the central region of the country.

“We have requested that the construction project for the new water intake station in Vadul lui Voda be expedited, taking into account the situation this year. Nevertheless, this summer we made a tremendous effort to build additional infrastructure to ensure citizens have access to water in the event of any situation,” the mayor said.

According to Ion Ceban, the measures include rehabilitating the floating water intake station, constructing and installing a high-capacity pump at depth in the Dniester, as well as building the underground network infrastructure needed to draw water from depth to the intake station, constructing a dam, installing a new power line, and obtaining pumps from the Government — all in order to ensure preparedness for any potential risk situation.

“Too often this summer, people were frightened and kept captive by messages claiming that they would soon be left without water. Such strategic issues must be taken seriously, and we must not play with people’s emotions, especially given that we are implementing the major project to build the new water pipeline and the new water intake station with the support of the Government of Germany,” he emphasized.

Chisinau City Hall is investing 40 million lei in this project, which will also serve as the main pillar responsible for subsequently supplying drinking water to the entire central region. The water supply will come from the new intake station being built in Vadul lui Voda.

Work on the large-scale project and preparation of all the necessary documents for its implementation began back in 2022.
