Prime Minister Presents New Salary Law: One-Time Payment to Be Granted in October to All Public-Sector Employees Earning Less Than 20,000 Lei

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan presented, during a press conference, amendments to the new Law on Remuneration in the Public Sector, as well as immediate financial measures to support public-sector employees, including those in education, until the law enters into force, TRIBUNA reports.

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan acknowledged that the initially announced deadline of September cannot be met. He explained that economic and energy shocks in the region have placed additional pressure on the budget, while the fiscal reform needed to generate sustainable additional revenues was adopted later than planned. The Government needs several more months to secure funding and implement the new salary scale in a responsible and sustainable manner.

“We recognize people’s frustration and the fact that objective reasons cannot be a sufficient justification. On behalf of the Government, I apologize that we were unable to fulfill our promise to increase salaries this autumn. I guarantee that, starting January 1, 2027, the new salary scale will come into force and salaries in the public sector will increase. This is a firm commitment, for which we are ensuring the necessary funding and preparations,” Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said.

Thus, in October, the Government will provide a one-time payment to all public-sector employees with a gross salary below 20,000 lei (based on full-time employment):

  • 4,000 lei — for education employees, including management, teaching and auxiliary teaching staff. The payment will be provided at a rate of 1,000 lei per month.
  • 3,000 lei — for employees in the social sector, defense, public order, healthcare (public institutions), culture, youth and sports, public administration and justice.
  • 2,000 lei — for workers and technical-sector staff.

The Government will allocate 500 million lei for this support measure.
