Prime Minister Vasile Tofan attended the national “Sport Through Generations” Festival in Nisporeni, the city designated Moldova’s Sports Capital for 2026, TRIBUNA reports.

The event is dedicated to sports, family, and community, bringing together children, young people, families, seniors, and people with disabilities in a program promoting sports, physical activity, and an active lifestyle. The agenda includes the “Generations Run,” demonstrations by sports federations, competitions for families and members of the diaspora, interactive activities, and a concert featuring local performers.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan congratulated Nisporeni on receiving the Sports Capital title and highlighted the important role of Moldovan athletes in promoting the image of the Republic of Moldova.

According to the Prime Minister, the title comes with a budget of 2 million lei this year, twice as much as last year.

“Our ambition is much greater. By 2030, we aim to open 10 multifunctional sports centers across the country and 50 well-equipped sports grounds at schools. Only in this way can we move things forward and build a healthier country,” Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said.

During the festival’s official ceremony, the Sports Capital Cup was symbolically handed over from Călărași, which hosted the previous edition, to Nisporeni.

Throughout the year, Nisporeni is hosting local and national sporting events, including national wrestling competitions, a round of the national motocross championship, sports festivals and demonstrations, events for professional and amateur athletes, special programs for seniors, and activities adapted for people with disabilities.

These initiatives aim to encourage participation in sports regardless of age and strengthen the role of sport as a means of fostering community cohesion.
