Moldova and Ukraine Sign Agreement on the Transit of Ukrainian Goods via Moldova’s Railway Network

The Republic of Moldova has reached an agreement with Ukraine, described as “economically beneficial for both sides,” on the transportation of Ukrainian goods via Moldova’s railway network along the section crossing Moldovan territory, the Government announced, TRIBUNA reports.

The agreement was negotiated by the team of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) with their Ukrainian counterparts, under the supervision of the two countries’ prime ministers.

“Ukraine plans to export and transport up to 6 million tonnes during the 2026 agricultural year, along various regional routes. Our country aims to attract a significant share of this volume, estimated at approximately 10% of the total, which is why we offered a 50% discount for transit through the territory of the Republic of Moldova. It is common practice for such discounts to be offered in order to attract large transit volumes.

Even with substantial discounts, the negotiated volumes will generate revenue and profits for Moldovan Railways (CFM). The potential opportunity for CFM is estimated at several million euros, which is why we want our railway operator to capture as much of this revenue as possible. At the same time, we are working to increase CFM’s capacity in order to ensure the most efficient logistics possible,” said the institution’s spokesperson, Dumitru Ciorici.

The parties agreed that the new regime would take effect upon request, from August 10 through the end of 2026.

It should also be noted that, starting August 10, a change was introduced for passengers travelling by train on the Kyiv–Chișinău route. The train operates daily according to a temporary schedule and now makes two stops: one at Chișinău Railway Station and another at Revaca station, for the convenience of passengers travelling to Chișinău International Airport.
