Government approves amendments to the Law on Currency Regulation

The Government has approved amendments to the Law on Currency Regulation. The draft aims to partially liberalize foreign-exchange capital transactions and align the national framework with European standards, TRIBUNA reports.

Among the main changes is an increase in the thresholds for carrying out certain foreign-exchange transactions without authorization from the National Bank of Moldova, from €10,000 to €100,000, with the threshold increasing to €250,000 starting January 1, 2028.

Certain procedures for residents will also be simplified, including by eliminating the notification requirement for some external loans and credits, as well as expanding the range of foreign-exchange transactions that can be carried out without authorization.

The draft also provides for easier opening of bank accounts abroad by resident individuals who are emigrating, expanded use of foreign currency at certain commercial establishments, and strengthened regulation and supervision of the foreign-exchange market.

These measures will simplify foreign-exchange operations, encourage investment activity by citizens and economic operators, and contribute to Moldova’s deeper integration into the international financial market.
