Igor Dodon: Moldova Must Use All Available International Platforms to Protect Its National and Economic Interests

Igor Dodon, leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), said that the Republic of Moldova must pragmatically assess the changes taking place and use all available international platforms to protect its national and economic interests, TRIBUNA reports.

“More and more countries are seeking observer status with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Myanmar, Nicaragua, and Venezuela have already submitted applications, while Cuba obtained this status back in 2020. Tunisia and Egypt are also mentioned among potential observers. At the same time, the EAEU is expanding its cooperation with other countries and developing free trade areas.

Let me remind you that the Republic of Moldova was the first country to obtain observer status with the EAEU — this happened in May 2018. Unfortunately, the current authorities have effectively given up using this platform and the opportunities it provides for developing economic cooperation,” the lawmaker said.

The politician also said that, against the backdrop of the energy, migration, and economic crises that the European Union is experiencing with increasing intensity, its original idea — bringing European countries together around economic cooperation, which began with cooperation in coal and steel — is now facing serious challenges.

“In this context, the role and attractiveness of other integration organizations, such as the EAEU, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), are growing,” Igor Dodon emphasized.
