Renato Usatîi: PAS Lawmakers Are Rushing Through Dozens of Bills Without Proper Review

Renato Usatîi, leader of the Our Party, criticized the way the PAS parliamentary majority is passing legislative packages in the final days before Parliament’s recess, accusing it of rushing through dozens of bills without giving lawmakers enough time to examine them, TRIBUNA reports.

“Just a few days before the parliamentary recess, dozens of laws are being voted on. We are told that MPs can read a thousand pages in 24 hours, which is absurd,” Usatîi told reporters.

The Our Party leader recalled that at the beginning of the parliamentary session he had proposed holding two plenary sittings per week so that draft laws could be reviewed at a normal pace instead of being concentrated at the end of the session.

“I proposed having two sittings a week so that we could actually do the work. The proposal was rejected. Now, just before the recess, they are holding two or even three sittings simply to create the impression that Parliament is working intensively,” he said.

According to Usatîi, the unofficial explanation offered by representatives of the parliamentary majority was that many MPs live outside Chișinău and would find it difficult to attend two weekly sittings.

“Members of Parliament receive allowances for transportation, accommodation, and other expenses. I believe they can afford to come to Parliament twice a week,” the Our Party leader said.

Usatîi argued that the accelerated pace of passing legislation undermines the quality of the legislative process.

“They are voting with their eyes closed. In many cases, even the MPs themselves do not understand what they are voting for. That is how we end up with crises and poor decisions later on,” he stated.

He also claimed that clustering a large number of bills into the final days of the parliamentary session is intended to create the impression—for both citizens and Moldova’s European development partners—that the legislature is highly active.
