Mayor Ion Ceban discusses strengthened cooperation with UN‑Habitat Regional Director Erfan Ali

Chișinău Mayor Ion Ceban held a meeting with Dr. Erfan Ali, UN‑Habitat Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, to discuss strengthening cooperation between Chișinău City Hall and UN‑Habitat in the areas of urban planning, sustainable mobility, and housing policy, TRIBUNA reports.

Mayor Ceban highlighted that a key topic of the discussion was the MoveSafe+ project, jointly implemented by UN‑Habitat and Chișinău City Hall through the General Directorate for Architecture, Urban Planning and Land Relations. According to the Mayor, the project aims to integrate sustainable urban mobility principles into the ongoing update of Chișinău’s General Urban Plan and to ensure better alignment between transport planning and the city’s territorial development.

Ceban noted that he also discussed with Dr. Ali the prospects for broader cooperation in the housing sector and urban regeneration. “We talked about integrating housing policies into the strategic documents currently being drafted, rehabilitating the existing housing stock, developing pilot projects for the renovation of residential blocks and neighbourhoods, identifying financing mechanisms, and strengthening the capacity of condominium owners’ associations,” he stated.

The Mayor emphasized that Chișinău needs modern urban policies that ensure a balanced relationship between housing, infrastructure, public services, mobility, and quality of life. In this context, he underlined that UN‑Habitat’s experience and expertise can significantly contribute to developing and implementing concrete solutions tailored to the municipality’s needs. “We agreed to continue the dialogue and identify practical cooperation directions, pilot projects, and financing opportunities for Chișinău’s sustainable development,” Ceban concluded.
