EU High Representative Kaja Kallas Begins Official Visit to the Republic of Moldova

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, began her official visit to the Republic of Moldova yesterday. She met with Moldova’s Minister of Defence, Anatolie Nosatîi, for discussions focused on security, resilience, and the EU’s support for modernising the defence sector, TRIBUNA reports.

Kallas praised the swift reaction of Moldovan authorities and the involvement of the National Army in the clean‑up efforts on the Nistru River in March, following water pollution caused by spillovers resulting from Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure. The decontamination measures were supported through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

Later, Kallas attended a presentation of equipment provided with EU support — including pickup trucks, forklifts, and refrigerators — aimed at strengthening Moldova’s operational capacities. She emphasised that investments in defence, security, and response capabilities are investments in peace, protecting both citizens and the country’s environment.

Also yesterday, the EU High Representative met with Moldova’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popșoi. Discussions focused on Moldova’s progress in EU accession, particularly in foreign policy, security, and defence — areas covered under Chapter 31 of the accession negotiations. This chapter reflects Moldova’s commitment to gradually align with the EU’s policies and positions in these fields. Kallas welcomed Moldova’s progress in aligning with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy.

This morning, Kaja Kallas met with representatives of Moldovan civil society. The discussions highlighted the essential role of civil society in strengthening democracy — from monitoring reforms and promoting transparency to ensuring that public policies reflect citizens’ needs.
