Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE), Alain Berset, TRIBUNA reports.
The discussion focused on preparations for the Council of Europe Ministerial Session, which will take place in Chișinău on 14–15 May. The event will bring together the foreign ministers of all 46 member states and will mark the conclusion of the Republic of Moldova’s mandate at the helm of the Committee of Ministers.
The Moldovan official thanked the Secretary General for his participation in the High‑Level Conference on the European Social Charter and the Conference on Social Rights – European Social Charter on 19 March, as well as in the international conference “Media Literacy and Information Integrity: Strengthening Resilience Against Disinformation and FIMI in Europe” on 20 March, both held in Chișinău in the context of Moldova’s Presidency of the Committee of Ministers.
During the meeting, Mihai Popșoi highlighted the importance of the Council of Europe’s assistance to the Republic of Moldova throughout three decades of cooperation, including its contribution to aligning national legislation with European standards.
For his part, Secretary General Alain Berset praised the current level of cooperation with the Republic of Moldova, particularly the country’s efforts in preparing the ministerial session. He reconfirmed the Council of Europe’s support for the authorities in Chișinău and for the country’s European integration path.
The two officials also discussed regional security developments, including the impact of the war in Ukraine and the need for a coordinated and united European response.
Additionally, the meeting saw the signing of the Agreement between the Council of Europe and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Moldova’s voluntary contribution to the CoE Action Plan for Ukraine and to supporting the implementation of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence.
