Government to ask Parliament to declare a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days

The Government will ask Parliament to declare a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days, TRIBUNA reports.

“Dear citizens, what is happening today in the energy sector is not an accident. Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure are a war crime, but also an attack on us here in the Republic of Moldova. Last night’s strikes led to the disconnection of the main power line supplying the Republic of Moldova — the Vulcănești–Isaccea line. The four interconnection lines with Romania have been activated, but the situation remains complicated. Russia is solely responsible for this.

In this context, the Government has the obligation to intervene promptly and responsibly. That is why I have convened a Government meeting today at 13:00, where we will propose declaring a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days. This is not a measure of panic, but of responsibility. It is a necessary step to act quickly, in a coordinated manner, and in the interest of the people.

This afternoon, I will go to Parliament together with the ministers and officials directly involved in managing the situation, to present all the arguments and necessary measures and to request the support of the MPs,” Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu stated.

The head of Government said that “our goal is clear: to take all necessary actions so that every citizen is safe and has access to basic needs.”

“Declaring a state of emergency will allow us to act more rapidly: to mobilize additional resources, to protect critical infrastructure, and, if necessary, to apply additional measures to limit the effects of the crisis.

We remain vigilant and act for the safety of every citizen.

I urge you to get information only from official sources. The Ministry of Energy will provide further updates,” the official concluded.
