Combating cross‑border crime was on the agenda of today’s meeting of the National Security Council, chaired by the head of state

Combating cross‑border crime was on the agenda of today’s meeting of the National Security Council, chaired by the head of state, Maia Sandu. The discussions focused on the main trends driven by the intensification of this phenomenon — arms, drug and human trafficking, as well as economic crime. Factors contributing to the increased risks include the Republic of Moldova’s geographical position, logistical disruptions caused by Russia’s war against Ukraine, and existing vulnerabilities on the Transnistrian segment, TRIBUNA reports.

In this context, participants highlighted the diversification of trafficking methods, including the use of postal parcels for the illegal transport of drugs. They also discussed attempts to circumvent international sanctions imposed on Russia by smuggling prohibited goods through organized crime networks.

Among the decisions adopted were the establishment of a permanent inter‑institutional mechanism for strategic and operational coordination, as well as the mobilization of the necessary financial resources to counter cross‑border criminal networks, particularly along the border with Ukraine and the administrative line with the Transnistrian region.

The discussions also underscored the need to strengthen the capacities of responsible institutions, especially the Border Police and the Customs Service, through investments in human resources and modern equipment. Additionally, authorities agreed to accelerate the implementation of effective solutions for parcel control and traceability, particularly to prevent the trafficking of prohibited substances.

The measures adopted during the National Security Council meeting align with the authorities’ ongoing efforts to prevent and combat risks to national security and to protect the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
