Government Allocates 1.82 Billion Lei for National Road Maintenance in 2026

For the maintenance and repair of national public roads, which have a total length of 5,993 km, the Government has allocated 1.82 billion lei for 2026. The Road Fund distribution program for the current year was approved today, TRIBUNA reports.

According to the authorities, the program’s priorities focus on keeping national roads in good operational condition through regular maintenance, preventing road surface degradation, and improving safety for all road users. The road sections requiring intervention were identified following an assessment of the national road network to ensure efficient use of allocated resources.

“This decision reflects how we ensure the safety of our people — how fast an ambulance can arrive, how safely a child can get to school, and how responsibly we spend every public leu. It is essential that every leu invested in infrastructure is used strictly and responsibly, and where this does not happen, we will intervene firmly,” stated Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Vladimir Bolea.

Approximately 672.68 million lei are earmarked for summer and winter road maintenance, as well as routine upkeep. The program also includes the installation of road signs and guardrails, construction and repair of sidewalks, and the development of parking areas.

Additionally, 423 million lei are allocated for the modernization of around 285 km of regional roads. More than 397 million lei will be directed toward capital repairs of roads and engineering structures — a total of 26 infrastructure objectives.

Beyond maintenance and repair funding, the Road Fund will also finance the establishment and equipping of a testing laboratory within the National Road Administration (S.A. “Administrația Națională a Drumurilor”). The laboratory will be responsible for quality control of construction materials and road repair works, as well as research, development, and the drafting of for new materials and technologies technical standards in the road sector.

The production base of the road maintenance companies (S.A. “Drumuri”) will also be strengthened through the procurement of specialized machinery and equipment.
