At the Munich Security Conference, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Popșoi, held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway, Espen Barth Eide, during which the Norwegian Government’s decision to open a resident embassy in Chișinău was discussed, TRIBUNA reports.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the establishment of a resident embassy in Chișinău reflects the deepening of Moldovan‑Norwegian bilateral relations, the expansion of sectoral cooperation, and the interest of both states in maintaining a permanent diplomatic presence. This will contribute to more efficient implementation of joint projects and to strengthening political and diplomatic dialogue.
The permanent diplomatic presence of the Kingdom of Norway in Chișinău will facilitate the coordination of development projects, the effective use of the support offered to the Republic of Moldova, and the intensification of cooperation in areas such as resilience, energy, good governance, and the advancement of the country’s European path.
“The opening of a resident embassy of the Kingdom of Norway in Chișinău is a strong signal of confidence and of strengthening the relations between our states. A permanent diplomatic presence will allow us to expand cooperation and implement joint projects more efficiently, including in support of the Republic of Moldova’s European integration,” stated Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi.
As part of the ongoing bilateral dialogue, the verbal note expressing the intention to establish a resident diplomatic mission in Chișinău was handed to the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Carolina Perebinos, during a meeting with the chargé d’affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway.
Currently, the Kingdom of Norway is accredited to the Republic of Moldova by concurrence through the Norwegian Embassy in Bucharest, while in Chișinău it is represented by a territorial office inaugurated last autumn.
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Kingdom of Norway were established in 1992.
