Petr Vlah: “External administration” of Gagauzia is a dangerous idea that must be rejected from the outset

Politician Petr Vlah states that, in recent weeks, certain circles in Comrat and beyond have been informally discussing the idea of placing the Gagauz Autonomous Region under “external administration” for a certain period. “I will not go into details, I will not refer to the specific scenarios being discussed, nor will I comment on the polished arguments some are preparing to ‘package’ this idea and ‘sell’ it to the public. Doing so would only trigger unwanted debates and further inflame tensions. I will simply say that this idea is extremely dangerous, and we must be ready to oppose it if those who promote it do not abandon it”, he said.

Vlah added that there is currently a certain power vacuum in the Gagauz Autonomy. “De facto, the region is being run by interim officials — this applies both to the Executive in Comrat and to the People’s Assembly. The mandates of the deputies expired months ago, and all attempts to organize elections have failed. There is no clarity regarding elections to the People’s Assembly or potential early elections for the Bashkan. In such a context, it is no surprise that hallucinatory ideas like placing Gagauzia under ‘external administration’ appear,” he noted.

He stressed that the existence of a power vacuum does not justify seeking “alternative solutions” outside the legal framework.

“All solutions must be identified strictly in accordance with the law. The Gagauz Autonomy functions based on clear, established principles, and the region must be governed by its legal institutions — the People’s Assembly and the Executive Committee — which represent the will expressed by the region’s voters. The only focus now should be how Chișinău and Comrat work together to unblock the situation regarding the elections. Alternative ideas such as ‘external administration’ should not even be considered, as they would only further complicate an already difficult situation,” Vlah concluded.
