Dmitri Torner, President of the Biathlon Federation of the Republic of Moldova and of the Winter Sports Association, took part in the official opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Italy. He attended the event together with the Moldovan athletes who will represent the country at this major international competition: biathletes Alina Stremous, Pavel Magazeev, Maksim Makarov and Mihail Usov, as well as cross‑country skiers Elizaveta Hlusovici and Iulian Luchin.

Torner emphasized that he is well aware of the tremendous work and effort the athletes invested to reach this level. “Qualifying for the Olympics is already a major achievement. I am confident that they will represent our country with dignity and will delight us with strong performances at the Games,” he stated.

He added that he was glad to have had the opportunity to provide the necessary support to ensure the athletes could prepare for the Olympics — and not only for them — in the best possible conditions. “Their previous results give me great optimism regarding their performance in Italy,” Torner noted.

He also recalled earlier international successes of Moldovan biathletes. In particular, he highlighted Alina Stremous’s results at the European Championships in Germany, where she won a silver medal in the 15 km individual race and a gold medal in the pursuit, placing Moldova third in the overall national ranking. Torner also mentioned the achievements of Moldovan biathletes in the IBU World Cup and the European Championships during the 2021/2022 season, which secured their qualification for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

“In general, Moldovan biathlon and cross‑country skiing have repeatedly shown strong results on the world stage. I believe that this year as well, both our biathletes and skiers will pleasantly surprise us with their performance. We wish them great success,” Torner concluded.

It should be noted that since the summer of 2025, Dmitri Torner has also been the leader of the political party “NOI – New Historical Option.”
