Parliament opens the spring session with a solemn sitting attended by Baltic dignitaries

The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova opened the spring session with a solemn sitting attended by the President of the Riigikogu of the Republic of Estonia, Lauri Hussar, the Speaker of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia, Daiga Mieriņa, and the President of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, Juozas Olekas, TRIBUNA reports.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu welcomed the presence of the Baltic officials, who are on an official visit to the Republic of Moldova between 2–4 February, and highlighted the profound transformations Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have undergone since joining the European Union in 2004: their economies have grown significantly, GDP has tripled, living standards have improved, and state institutions have become stronger and more efficient.

“The Baltic States are a clear example that EU membership brings tangible results for citizens. We, too, have a strong and clear mandate from our citizens to lead the Republic of Moldova into the European Union. Parliament and its deputies have an essential role in this process: to adopt the necessary reforms, strengthen democracy and prepare the country for accession,” the Speaker underlined.

In their speeches delivered from the central rostrum, the presidents of the Baltic parliaments reiterated their unwavering support for Moldova’s European path.

The President of the Riigikogu of Estonia, Lauri Hussar, stated that the Republic of Moldova has demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination in advancing democratic reforms and its European course, and that Estonia firmly supports this effort. “We believe that Moldova’s future lies within the European family. Estonia understands the challenges of institutional reform, strengthening governance and building public trust. We are ready to share our experience as a partner willing to support, listen and cooperate,” he said.

For her part, the Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia, Daiga Mieriņa, emphasized that the Republic of Moldova is an example for other EU candidate countries. “In our view, the first negotiation cluster with Moldova and Ukraine should be opened immediately, to bring your country closer to its stated goal of completing accession talks by 2028. At the same time, we can also draw inspiration from your experience. This year, Latvia will hold parliamentary elections, and we will certainly take into account Moldova’s experience in preventing disinformation and external interference,” she noted.

The President of the Seimas of Lithuania, Juozas Olekas, stressed that Moldova’s determination and consistency on the path of European integration strengthen political will in European capitals for EU enlargement. “Continued progress in reforms is a convincing argument for increasing EU financial support for Moldova, including for economic transformation and reintegration efforts,” he said.

According to the Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, the spring session begins in February and cannot extend beyond the end of July.
