Head of State: We are discussing with member states, with those representing the states, and with the EU — to find a solution and open accession negotiations

President Maia Sandu stated during a press conference that the Republic of Moldova is awaiting a solution for the formal, not only technical, opening of accession negotiations with the European Union (EU), after earlier discussions suggested they might begin in December 2025, TRIBUNA reports.

Referring to rumors about a “partial accession,” the President said she had not held any discussions on this topic with the European Commission or any other EU institution.

“This topic has not been raised. Moreover, we saw the Commission’s reaction — which denied what was reported in the press. We support full‑fledged accession and have never been approached regarding any alternative format. We know such discussions exist, but we do not know at what level. It is a complex and serious debate among member states regarding decision‑making,” she noted.

Maia Sandu added that all 27 member states support the formal opening of negotiations for the Republic of Moldova, but that “there is one state that does not support opening negotiations for Ukraine, because it is in a complicated situation.”

“Obviously, efforts are being made to find a solution for both states.

…We have not discussed with the opposition in Hungary, but we are discussing with the member states, with those representing the states, and with the EU — to find the solution and open the negotiations. Meanwhile, we continue our work and have the technical opening of the negotiations,” the President added.
