President Maia Sandu participated in the official opening of Cyprus’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union

President Maia Sandu participated in the official opening of Cyprus’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The event, hosted by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, brought together several high‑level officials, including the President of the European Council António Costa, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In discussions with European leaders, the head of state reaffirmed the Republic of Moldova’s firm commitment to advancing the agreed reforms and emphasized that Moldova remains a credible partner that has demonstrated resilience and a clear European choice, and is prepared for the next stages of the EU accession process.

In 2025, the Republic of Moldova registered significant progress on its European path: it launched technical discussions with the European Commission on three of the six clusters of negotiation chapters, accelerated reforms in justice and public administration, strengthened institutional capacities, continued aligning national legislation with the EU acquis, and completed the screening process. Cooperation with EU institutions intensified, while EU support translated into investments, development projects, and measures to enhance economic and energy resilience. The implementation of the Growth Plan for Moldova also began.

On the sidelines of the event, President Sandu met with President Zelenskyy. Their discussions focused on regional security, efforts toward lasting peace in Europe, bilateral cooperation, and the European integration processes of both countries.
