Annual Meeting of Ambassadors. Maia Sandu urged Moldova’s diplomacy to act with responsibility, determination, and unity

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, participated in the annual meeting of ambassadors, where she outlined the main directions of the country’s foreign policy for 2026. In her speech, the head of state emphasized that the regional and international context, marked by intensified hybrid threats, remains complicated.

According to a statement from the Presidency, under these geopolitical conditions, the only realistic strategy for the Republic of Moldova to survive as a democratic, free, and sovereign state is accession to the European Union. This objective is an absolute priority of both domestic and foreign policy. Maia Sandu also highlighted the need to intensify political dialogue, strengthen strategic communication, and actively promote Moldova’s interests and image in EU member states.

Special emphasis was placed on relations with Moldova’s neighbors. President Maia Sandu reiterated that Romania remains the country’s number one strategic partner and the main supporter of its European path, energy security, economic development, and connectivity with the EU. She also reaffirmed Moldova’s firm and consistent support for Ukraine, stressing that Ukraine’s resilience is crucial for Moldova’s security.

The President also referred to the need to deepen bilateral relations with important partners beyond the EU, such as the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland, and Turkey. Moldova will also continue to develop economic cooperation with Middle Eastern countries and with China.

Partnerships will be strengthened in the wider neighborhood as well, including with Western Balkan countries that share Moldova’s aspiration to join the EU. At the same time, economic cooperation will be expanded with countries in the Caucasus and Central Asia, especially in the context of opening Moldova’s embassy in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

Among the priorities of Moldovan diplomacy are supporting economic development by attracting investments, promoting exports, and deepening economic relations with partner countries.

Another key objective remains mobilizing international support to strengthen the country’s security and positioning Moldova as a responsible partner that actively contributes to regional stability.

The head of state also addressed the role of the diaspora, emphasizing that Moldovan citizens abroad are an integral part of society and an important pillar of foreign policy. Maia Sandu highlighted the responsibility of diplomatic missions to actively support the diaspora, including by improving document issuance and renewal processes, modernizing consular services, and expanding access to services for citizens. She also stressed the importance of organizing cultural, educational, and community events to maintain the diaspora’s connection with Moldova, promote cultural identity, and strengthen the country’s image abroad.

In conclusion, President Maia Sandu stated that the Republic of Moldova is at a crossroads, where actions taken in the coming years will define the country’s future for decades. She urged Moldova’s diplomacy to act with responsibility, determination, and unity in the national interest, in order to firmly advance the strategic objective of Moldova’s accession to the European Union.
