President Sandu Visits Athens. Prime Minister Mitsotakis: Moldova’s Accession to the European Union Is a Strategic Priority for Greece

On Monday, December 15, President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu paid a working visit to the Hellenic Republic, where she met with President Konstantinos Tasoulas and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The talks in Athens focused on advancing Moldova’s EU accession process, strengthening bilateral relations, expanding economic and trade cooperation, and harnessing the potential of Greek investments in Moldova’s economy, TRIBUNA reports.

The head of state reiterated Moldova’s firm commitment to the European path: “A Moldova firmly anchored in the European family—dedicated to democracy, reforms, and cooperation—strengthens the Union as a whole. Enlargement has always made Europe stronger: politically, economically, and in terms of security. Moldova wishes to actively contribute to this common effort,” emphasized President Maia Sandu.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis praised Moldova’s progress on its European path and stressed: “Moldova’s accession to the European Union is a strategic priority for Greece.”

Energy security was a central topic of discussion, reflecting its strategic importance for both Moldova and the wider region. Greece’s role as a key pillar of regional energy security was highlighted, thanks to its rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity and strategic investments in gas infrastructure, which contribute to diversification and secure energy supply in Southeastern Europe.

President Sandu also underlined the positive dynamics of bilateral cooperation, noting that government teams are already working closely to translate the strong political relationship into concrete economic projects in renewable energy, infrastructure, food industry, digital services, and tourism.

The agenda in Athens also included a discussion with international relations experts hosted by the ELIAMEP Foundation and participation in the Delphi Economic Forum. The visit reconfirmed Moldova’s commitment to deepening ties with EU member states and building solid partnerships for economic development, security, and European integration.
