President Maia Sandu held a meeting today with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, in the context of Moldova taking over the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. The Chairmanship, under the motto “For a Europe of Peace and Resilience”, will focus on promoting peace, supporting mechanisms for a just peace in Ukraine, and strengthening democratic resilience across the continent.
The Head of State emphasized that, after three elections in two years marked by foreign interference, the Republic of Moldova is ready to actively contribute to European efforts to protect democracies against hybrid attacks.
During the discussions, the President welcomed the constant support provided by the Council of Europe for strengthening institutional capacities and advancing justice sector reforms included in the Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Moldova 2025–2028. This document is an essential tool for reinforcing the independence and integrity of the judiciary, aligning legislation with European standards, and increasing transparency and accessibility of state institutions for the benefit of citizens.
President Maia Sandu reaffirmed Moldova’s firm commitment to remain a constructive European partner, dedicated to peace, democracy, and the rule of law. Over the next six months, our country will play an increasingly active role in the work of the Council of Europe, with the Chairmanship concluding at the Ministerial Meeting in Chișinău on May 15, 2026.
