Strengthening cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the Council of Europe — discussed at Government level

The strengthening of cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the Council of Europe, along with measures to implement the priorities of Moldova’s Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, were discussed today during a meeting between Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, reports TRIBUNA.

The Prime Minister emphasized that his recent visit to Brussels was productive and that the Government is working intensively to achieve the strategic goal of Moldova’s accession to the European Union. “We want to show our citizens that joining the EU is not just about meeting certain requirements, but about better education and healthcare, infrastructure projects, a more favorable business environment, and greater security,” the Prime Minister stated.

The key priorities during Moldova’s six-month presidency of the Committee of Ministers include strengthening democracy, defending human rights, continuing efforts to counter disinformation, and maintaining support for Ukraine. The Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Moldova 2025–2028 includes assistance for justice reform, anti-corruption efforts, strengthening media legislation, protecting human rights, and supporting EU accession efforts.

In this context, Secretary General Alain Berset praised the conduct of free and fair elections this autumn, despite hybrid attacks. The officials stressed the need for coordinated efforts to more effectively combat foreign information interference and to enhance public resilience to disinformation.

On November 20–21, Secretary General Berset is participating in the meetings of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), hosted in Chișinău and bringing together around 60 parliamentarians from the Council of Europe’s 46 member states.

The Council of Europe is an international organization dedicated to the protection of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. The Republic of Moldova joined the Council of Europe on July 13, 1995, and previously held the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers in 2003.
