The Secretary General of the Council of Europe will pay a visit to the Republic of Moldova

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, will pay a visit to the Republic of Moldova on 20 and 21 November, as the country begins its six-month Presidency of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers.

During the visit, the Secretary General will meet the President of the Republic, Maia Sandu, and the Prime Minister, Alexandru Munteanu.

Discussions are expected to focus on ongoing work to implement the priorities of the Moldovan Presidency and on strengthening cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the Council of Europe.

Topics on the agenda include the commitment to continued support to Ukraine and accountability for the crime of aggression by the Russian Federation, the need for European states to engage in a New Democratic Pact for Europe to enhance democratic security across the continent, and the challenges to European democracies created by disinformation and foreign information interference.

During his visit, Secretary General Berset will also participate in the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly’s (PACE) Standing Committee, which brings together some 60 parliamentarians from the Council of Europe’s 46 member states, as well as in meetings of the PACE Bureau and the PACE Ad hoc Committee on the New Democratic Pact for Europe.

The Republic of Moldova took over the Presidency of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers on 14 November and will hold it until May 2026.
