Ion Ceban: European integration has no alternative, but this goal cannot be achieved through slogans—it requires real actions and reforms

Ion Ceban, one of the leaders of the ALTERNATIVA Bloc, stated in an analysis published on his official page that the European integration of the Republic of Moldova must be treated as a national objective, not as a campaign theme, TRIBUNA reports.

He pointed out that in recent years, the topic of European integration has been excessively used for electoral purposes—during presidential and parliamentary campaigns, as well as in the 2025 constitutional referendum, which narrowly passed and revealed how divided society is.

“European integration has no alternative, and Moldova can hope for a dignified and prosperous future only as part of the larger European family. But this goal cannot be achieved through slogans—it requires real actions and reforms,” said Ion Ceban.

He emphasized that Moldova continues to lag behind in democracy, rule of law, and human rights, and that state institutions are often used for political interests. “De facto, Moldova is a captured state, where institutions serve political agendas rather than the interests of citizens,” stated the ALTERNATIVA Bloc leader.

On the economy, Ceban noted stagnation, declining exports, and the reluctance of foreign investors. “Under these conditions, the national economy is not prepared to withstand competitive pressures or integrate into the EU’s economic framework,” he added.

“The issue must be viewed in its full complexity. Beyond standards and procedures, we must seriously address the state of democracy, the rule of law, and the national economy. Otherwise, we may one day have to admit that Moldova missed its chance to join the EU because it failed to do its homework,” concluded Ion Ceban.
