Head of State: It is important to remain united, regardless of ethnicity, language, or culture

President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, participated today in the 2025 Ethnic Communities Festival, which brought together hundreds of representatives from Moldova’s ethnic communities in the heart of the capital.

In her address to participants, the Head of State emphasized the importance of unity and mutual respect in society, regardless of ethnicity, language, or culture. “When we were united, we built and lived in peace. When we were divided, we all lost. That’s why peace begins in our hearts. Without it, we cannot build anything lasting,” Maia Sandu stated.

She drew attention to attempts to sow division and reaffirmed: “The people of Moldova want peace, not conflict. Peace cannot be divided by communities or regions. It belongs to everyone—or it does not exist at all.”

The President also spoke about the role of knowing the Romanian language, as well as the value of preserving and promoting the languages of Moldova’s ethnic communities. “Mutual respect also means respect for the languages we speak. Romanian helps us communicate, stay informed, and access more opportunities. At the same time, the languages spoken by our communities—Ukrainian, Russian, Gagauz, Bulgarian, and others—are part of Moldova’s richness. Preserving and passing them on means honoring the roots of our people,” she added.

Addressing citizens in Russian, Maia Sandu said: “Since February 2022, my main goal has been—and remains—maintaining peace in Moldova. And I will continue this mission—together with you and with your support.”

The Ethnic Communities Festival is now in its 24th edition and this year is held under the theme “Unity in Diversity.”
