“In the context of speculation regarding the participation in voting with expired identity papers,” the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has clarified the situation, presenting exact data on participation in the vote in the last presidential election.
As TRIBUNA informs, according to a press release, analyzing the data from SIAS “Elections” about the participation in the second round of elections for the post of President of the Republic of Moldova on 30 October 2016, we find that out of the number of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, permanently abroad, 138,350 voters participated in the vote, and 175 voters voted using expired identity documents.
“Any other figures used in this respect are manipulators and distort the essence of the electoral process. Applying the Decision of the Constitutional Court no. 5 dated 14.01.2019, which examines the constitutional review of some of the provisions of Article 58 par. (3) lit. c) of the Electoral Code (voting outside the country on the basis of expired identity cards or identity papers), the Commission reiterates its position on voting only on the basis of valid identity documents. “
