Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, the head of the Jewish Community from Moldova, Alexander Belinkis and representatives of the Education, Culture and Research Ministry discussed an agenda of activities of commemorating the victims of the Holocaust, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.   

On 29 January, the parliament, along with the government and the Jewish Community from Moldova will carry out a string of activities dedicated to the Holocaust remembrance. The programme will start on this day in the morning, with a requiem rally for commemorating the Holocaust’s victims. On the same day, the parliament will organize a roundtable and will host an exhibition of photos in the memory of the Holocaust’s victims.

Moldova’s parliament condemned the Holocaust in July 2014, by adopting a political declaration on the acceptance of the Report of the International Commission for the Study of the Holocaust, presided over by Elie Wiesel. The political declaration also condemns any attempt of ignoring and denying the Holocaust and pays homage to its victims and survivors. According to report’s data, in 1941 alone, 60,000 Jews were killed in Bessarabia and Bucovina and about 105,000 – 120,000 Jews and Romanies died following expulsions from the Transnistrian region.

The National Holocaust Remembrance Day has been annually marked in Moldova since 2015, under a decision approved by the parliament.
