Electoral period for parliamentary elections began today

The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) announced that today the electoral period began for the parliamentary elections of 24 February 2019.

According to the Commission, the electoral period will have a maximum of 90 days and will end with the confirmation of the election results by the Constitutional Court.

During this period, several actions will be taken: informing voters and training electoral officials on the particularities of the mixed electoral system, nomination and registration of candidates, organizing electoral agitation, running the electoral roll, monitoring elections and reflecting them in media, organizing elections, counting votes, summing up election results etc.

The nomination of candidates for the post of MP and their registration as electoral contestants will begin 60 days before the election day, on 26 December 2018. The election campaign for all candidates will begin 30 days before the election day – on 25 January 2019.

Also, CEC warned “any action of electoral agitation, until the official start of the electoral campaign, is a violation of the electoral legislation “.

The parliamentary elections of 24 February 2019 will be held for the first time under a mixed system.

At the same time, on election day, a consultative referendum will be held on reducing the number of MPs from 101 to 61 and removal from office, if they fail to fulfill their duties properly.
