Printing of ballot papers on local referendum begins in capital

The Central Election Commission (CEC) today announced start printing ballots for the local referendum on dismissal of Chisinau mayor.

CEC head Alina Russu noted that the ballot papers are printed at the “Central Printing House” in the capital. “Their total number is about 632,000, of which around 413,000 are in Romanian and 218,000 in Russian. Their total price is 98,000 lei”, Russu said.

“The ballot papers will be printed during the day, and already on 17 November, from 11:00, they will be distributed to the polling stations”.

The referendum to dismiss the mayor will be held on 19 November 2017. Over 160,000 votes are needed that Dorin Chirtoaca be dismissed. At least one third of over 647,000 voters enrolled in the lists should participate in elections for the referendum to be valid.

Chirtoaca tops the capital since 2007. He is currently being investigated in two cases on influence peddling and service duties, and is under judicial control. The mayor of the capital, temporarily suspended from office, denies the accusations and pleads not guilty.
