Election results with 99.42% of votes counted

Runoff elections will be held to choose Moldova’s President given that none of the candidates polled at least half of the vote. After 99.42% of the votes cast in the October 30 presidential elections were counted, the results show Igor Dodon won 48.23% of the ballot, while Maia Sandu – 38.42%, IPN reports.

Central Election Commission president Alina Russu, in a press briefing at 10am, said the data are not final yet. The final results will be tabulated when the CEC receives all the electronic documents in the original.

The highest voter turnout in the October 30 presidential elections was recorded in the municipality of Chisinau – 54.3%, while the lowest one in Cantemir district – slightly over 40%. In Balti municipality, the turnout was slightly over 50%. More than 67,000 Moldovans voted at the polling stations established outside the country’s borders. The Moldovan voters in Italy, Romania, France and the UK were the most active ones.

More than 678,000 people voted for the chairman of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon, while over 540,000 people gave their vote for the leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” Maia Sandu, who is the joint candidate of the center-right opposition.

The candidate of “Our Party” Dumitru Chubashenko gained 6.03% of the vote, the candidate of the European People’s Party Iurie Leanca – 3.11%, the Liberal Party’s candidate Mihai Ghimpu – 1.8%, independent candidate Valeriu Giletski – 1.08%, independent Maia Laguta – 0.75%, independent Silvia Radu – 0.4% and candidate of The Right Ana Gutu – 0.17%.

The general turnout was 49.03% of the voters written on the electoral rolls.
