Over 3,500 Moldovans residing abroad previously registered for presidential elections

A number of 3,570 Moldovan citizens eligible to vote residing abroad have been previously registered online, in order to participate in the presidential elections, the Central Election Commission (CEC) reported today.

According to CEC data, most Moldovan citizens who have earlier registered are in Romania (599), Italy (422) and the United States (364), and the lowest number of Moldovans registered are in other 21 countries – one citizen in each state.

People with right to vote, who have previously registered, will be automatically temporarily removed from the basic electoral list, according to place of residence in Moldova.

The information on the number of previously registered citizens is to be submitted to government, to take a decision on the need to open additional polling stations, supplementary to the ones placed at the headquarters of diplomatic missions and consular offices. At the same time, the number of voters who participated in the previous elections will be taken into account, when organizing the polling stations.

The period of preliminary registration of Moldovans eligible to vote, who will be abroad on election day, ends today, i.e. 40 days before the presidential election day at the latest, given that under the Electoral Code, the polling stations are set up by 35 days before election day at the earlest.

On 30 October 2016, direct elections of president will take place in Moldova.
