The Foreign Policy Commission heard a report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the economic diplomacy objectives of the Republic of Moldova, presented by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi. The meeting was also attended by 66 honorary consuls, TRIBUNA reports.
According to the document, the main objectives of economic diplomacy are attracting investment, increasing exports of domestic products, and strengthening Moldova’s image as an attractive tourist destination. To this end, between January and September 2026, the MFA organized bilateral business forums and business visits and strengthened cooperation with development partners and international economic organizations.
This year, the MFA laid the foundations for a more effective economic diplomacy system. A unified coordination mechanism was introduced to clarify institutional responsibilities and eliminate overlaps; the framework governing the work of trade and economic advisers was updated; and performance indicators were established to assess their activities.
During the same period, Moldova’s diplomatic missions organized more than 30 economic promotion events in over 20 countries, focusing particularly on promoting wines, agri-food products, and cosmetics. Meetings between Moldovan companies and foreign partners and investors were facilitated, including through participation in trade fairs, forums, and business missions.
Moldovan wine remained one of the country’s main promotional tools, with events and tastings organized in several countries, including Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden, South Korea, and the United States. Diplomatic missions also promoted tourism, culture, and domestic products, including through cooperation with foreign journalists and content creators.
The MFA’s priorities for the end of 2026 and for 2027 include expanding economic contacts with markets in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Oceania, including through the organization of forums and business missions, as well as launching the Network of Economic Ambassadors of the Republic of Moldova. The Ministry will continue to support domestic producers and exporters by facilitating access to new markets and reducing bottlenecks at the border. At the same time, Moldova will be promoted as a destination for investment, business, and tourism, including through the “Ambassador Wine of the Republic of Moldova” project.
The Republic of Moldova has more than 90 honorary consuls — individuals who are not paid by the state but represent the country’s interests in other states and contribute to the development of economic, trade, cultural, and investment relations.
