Maia Sandu took part in the second meeting of the European Coalition Against Drugs

President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu took part in the second meeting of the European Coalition Against Drugs, held on the margins of the European Political Community summit in Yerevan. The Coalition was launched in October 2025 in Copenhagen at the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, as a collective response by European leaders to the growing threats posed by drug trafficking and organized crime, TRIBUNA reports.

During the meeting, leaders reaffirmed that combating illicit financial flows, money laundering, and corruption is an essential component of a comprehensive anti‑drug strategy. Senior officials stressed that sanctioning mechanisms targeting assets derived from criminal activities involving individuals and organizations engaged in drug trafficking must be adopted by as many states as possible, including the proposal currently being developed at EU level.

They also committed to harmonizing procedures for the confiscation of assets obtained through criminal activities and for the management of recovered funds, ensuring that national law‑enforcement institutions and prevention programmes can directly benefit from these resources. Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening operational cooperation among Coalition members and improving information exchange, especially regarding the use of cryptocurrencies for money‑laundering purposes.

Moldova’s participation in the meeting builds on Chișinău’s ongoing efforts to combat cross‑border crime. Like other European countries, Moldova faces threats posed by drug trafficking and organized criminal networks, given its geographic position and the region’s security pressures. Addressing these challenges is a national priority, and cooperation at the European level serves as a crucial multiplier for domestic efforts.
