President Sandu: “On January 27, we commemorate the victims of the Holocaust — a tragedy whose memory still fills us with horror”

On the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, delivered a message honoring the memory of those who suffered during this unimaginable tragedy.

“On January 27, we commemorate the victims of the Holocaust — a tragedy whose memory still horrifies us today. Six million Jews were murdered simply because they were Jews, along with Roma, persons with disabilities, and others killed solely for being considered ‘different’. It was a tragedy that began with hatred, exclusion, and complicit silence in the face of suffering,” the head of state noted.

President Maia Sandu recalled that in 2026 it will be 85 years since the beginning of the Holocaust on the territory of our country, stressing that we have no right to forget those who were deported, humiliated, shot, or left to die from hunger and cold. She also reiterated that remembrance alone is not enough. “‘Never again’ is a daily responsibility for each of us — by rejecting hatred, defending human dignity, and having the courage to speak out against injustice,” President Sandu emphasized.

During her visit to Strasbourg, the head of state will take part today, January 27, in the ceremony dedicated to the memory of the Holocaust victims, organized by the Council of Europe.
