MPs today are going to consider a draft amendment to the Constitution of Moldova, an initiative which if supported will cancel parliamentary immunity of lawmakers, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
Under the draft, the paragraph 3 of the Article No 70 of the Constitution will be removed. Now it stipulates that the MP cannot be detained, arrested, searched, except for flagrant offenses or prosecuted without the consent of parliament.
At the same time, the amendment will not limit the independence of MP and shall not affect his right to freedom of opinion and vote, seen in the Article No 71 of the Supreme Law. Thus, the lawmaker will not be subject to criminal, civil or contravention prosecution for votes or opinions expressed in the execution of the mandate.
The initiative has been earlier approved by the Constitutional Court.
